PFAS treatment at a Danish landfill
Leachate from a Danish landfill's wells is collected in a central container — and treated for PFAS in one of our facilities before onward handling.
Background: PFAS in leachate
Leachate at landfills forms when water penetrates through the waste material down to a membrane, from where it is directed to a well or container. On the way, substances from the waste dissolve into the water — including PFAS from water-repellent materials and impregnated textiles.
PFAS compounds are extremely stable, break down very slowly, and accumulate in soil, water and organisms. They are toxic, linked to hormonal disruptions, weakened immune systems and increased cancer risk — and they can contaminate drinking water sources.
The installation
At this Danish landfill, leachate from the various wells is transported into a large central container. One of our treatment facilities takes the leachate from this container for further processing.
