Tolomarka leachate treatment project

A 2 km leachate pipeline kept clogging with iron precipitation. A compact aeration and bioreactor solution removes the iron before it enters the pipe.

The customer's challenge

From the closed Tolomarka landfill, a leachate pipeline runs approximately 2 km to its discharge point in the fjord. The pipeline frequently became clogged due to iron precipitation. Beyond the primary goal of removing iron, there was a clear interest in eliminating heavy metals, organic pollutants and other particle-bound substances.

The average flow is approximately 3–4 L/s but varies significantly, and the discharge area is confined — requiring the simplest and most compact treatment system possible.

The solution

Eden Aquatech delivered an aeration solution combined with a bioreactor. Aeration oxidizes the dissolved iron so it precipitates in a controlled treatment step — before the water enters the pipeline — while the bioreactor reduces organic pollutants and particle-bound substances.
