Proven treatment process
HolKof™ is a patented bioreactor based on the mammoth pump and biofilm principle. It is designed for efficient aerobic and anaerobic breakdown of organic material (BOD), reduction of nitrogen compounds, oxidation of redox metals and precipitation of phosphate. The design also allows the reactor to be used for removing substances such as chlorate.
The system was primarily developed to reduce ammonium — a significant issue for landfill operators and a driver of eutrophication in nature. Ammonium is oxidized on the biofilm surface to nitrate, which moves deeper into the biofilm, is used as an electron acceptor, and is reduced to harmless nitrogen gas. BOD is consumed during denitrification, and phosphorus and redox metals are oxidized and settled in the sludge.
By adapting operating conditions, suitable microorganisms can be introduced and favored — making the reactor a controlled, living treatment system rather than a static filter.
