Merab leachate water project

A barrier wall and two aerators turned one of Merab's leachate ponds into an optimized nitrification–denitrification system — with improved nitrogen levels from the start.

The customer's challenge

Merab (Mellanskånes Renhållnings AB) operates a waste management and recycling center at Rönneholms Mosse, including three landfills — two closed and one active. When rain or snow falls over the landfill areas, the water carries pollutants, organic matter and nutrients such as nitrogen. Released untreated, this would harm the environment and drive eutrophication, so the water is treated in a series of leachate ponds.

In one of these ponds, Merab wanted to optimize the separation of nitrogen and organic matter while improving the pond's hydraulics.

The solution

Eden Aquatech installed a barrier wall forming an aerated containment basin. Inside the basin, two aerators create a high-oxygen nitrification zone — optimal conditions for the aerobic bacteria essential to nitrogen conversion. The water then continues into a denitrification zone.

The result

Initial results already show improved nitrogen levels, with a pond hydraulic profile that puts every treatment stage to full use.
